October 12, 2009 - Religion is for the Weak

I’ve been reading The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins, and it’s refreshing to see a fellow Atheist use science to refute the validity of religion. Many of us Black Americans were forced to endure countless hours of being indoctrinated into Christianity when we were little. That was done in similar fashion to the ways in which our ancestors were forcefully taught that religion by slave owners and overseers who needed obedient slaves. Their justification for forcing slaves to become Christians was so that they would be so focused upon being rewarded by “God” in the afterlife, that they would forget about the miserable plight that constituted their daily lives. And rather than accept that fact and question the irrational beliefs that are inherent in Christianity, many Blacks continue to be obedient slaves to that religion. They refuse to question it, as intelligent people should, because they fear their “God” will punish them with eternal damnation.

The God Delusion and books like it should be read by anyone who believes that they are an intelligent human being. Books and people that dare to question Christianity and religion should be given consideration, rather than dismissed. When someone has the audacity to question religion, they are exhibiting the reasoning that causes society to progress and prosper. The alternative is society remaining in a state of stagnation because people refuse to reject outdated beliefs that are based upon myths and superstition. Science provides more answers to how we came into being, and where we are headed, than religion ever will.

Weak people follow religion because they are too scared to question their beliefs. Intelligent people exhibit strength by questioning religion. They are advanced in their thinking, and adherents of religion should work towards attaining that strength.
